Why a tax estimator can't be a tax return
Real federal returns depend on dozens of facts the estimator does not ask about, including (but not limited to):
- The QBI deduction under ยง199A (up to 20% of qualified business income; with phase-outs, SSTB rules, W-2 wage limits, etc.)
- Itemized vs. standard deduction choice; SALT cap; mortgage interest; charitable contributions
- Tax credits (Child Tax Credit, EITC, Premium Tax Credit, education credits, energy credits, etc.)
- Retirement plan contributions for the self-employed (SEP, SIMPLE, Solo 401(k)) and their interaction with SE tax and AGI
- Self-employed health insurance deduction and HSA contributions
- S-corp election effects on payroll vs. distribution split
- Net operating losses, depreciation method choices, ยง179 expensing, bonus depreciation
- State and local income tax
- Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) for certain higher earners
